Traditionally dentists have used probing with hand instruments, x-rays and visual cues to find dental decay. These methods find cavities, however compared to more advanced technologies they are only between 50-75% accurate. DIAGNOdent uses laser technology to find dental caries before it can be seen, probed or detected by x-rays. A computer readout is available to the dentist as the light from a laser diode is shined on the teeth giving immediate feedback. DIAGNOdent is a safe way to detect tooth decay in its earliest stages.
One of the main complaints about going to the dentist is the injection that preceded dental treatments. Even with topical anesthetic to ease the pinch, many people are uncomfortable with the injection. The DentalVibe provides an extra measure of comfort by vibration at the injection site. This vibration blocks the sensation of pain while the injection is being administered. Patients report feeling no pain while being injected when DentalVibe is used.
Even though traditional cone x-ray machines generally put out less radiation than a few hours in the sun, you still have that exposure. With digital x-rays, patients are exposed to one tenth the radiation of traditional x-ray machines. At Smile Avenue Family Dentistry, we use digital x-rays to protect our patients from unnecessary radiation exposure.
With intraoral imaging we are able to detect and diagnose issues below the surface areas of the mouth. This technology allows the dentist to see the extent of dental decay within teeth, any problems that may be occurring in the bone and other issues. Exposure to radiation is very low.

3D Cone Beam Technology
When it comes to placing dental implants, we have invested in the latest dental imaging technology available. Our 3D Cone Beam scanning system allows for more predictable implants surgery and more successful outcomes. CBCT technology provides clear three-dimensional images of the entire mouth, including the surrounding nerves, sinuses and bone that need to be considered when placing a dental implant. When it comes to restoring your smile, we are proud to use the best that modern dentistry has to offer.
Many dental procedures require that the site being worked on be kept dry and free from debris. The Isolite system helps achieve this. It provides a more comfortable experience for the patient as well since debris from the dental procedure is kept out of the mouth. The dentist has better visibility for the area being addressed and moisture control is not a problem. The Isolite system allows the dentist to be more efficient in completing dental procedures and that means less time in the dental chair for you.
Whitening your teeth can make you look younger. Your smile is brighter and more vibrant. At Smile Avenue Family dentistry, we use the ZOOM Whitening system to brighten the smiles of our patients. Zoom uses a hydrogen peroxide whitening agent which is activated by a special light. Including preparation, activation and cleanup the procedure lasts less than an hour. Actual treatment time is about 45 minutes. Three 15 minute applications are needed to completely remove stains and discolorations from the teeth. After the whitening process is completed a gel containing fluoride is placed on the teeth to reduce sensitivity.
One of the most popular sedation methods in dentistry is the use of nitrous oxide. Also known as “laughing gas” nitrous oxide relaxes the patient and provides a euphoric state while the dental procedure is taking place. Patients receive a combination of nitrous oxide and oxygen to help them relax through the procedure. Once the work is completed, the nitrous oxide is discontinued and pure oxygen is administered to clear the system. Patients recover completely often feeling refreshed. Nitrous oxide is considered a mild sedative and is the sedation of choice when a child needs to be sedated in order to be comfortable during dental procedures.
