UNDERSTANDING THE BASICS

What Is Dental Bridges?

A dental bridge is a fixed restoration that replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring artificial teeth (called pontics) to the natural teeth on either side of the gap. Unlike dentures, bridges are cemented in place — you brush and floss around them just like natural teeth.

Traditional bridges are the most common type: crowns are placed on the teeth flanking the gap (called abutment teeth), with one or more false teeth suspended between them. The result is a seamless row of teeth that looks, feels, and functions naturally.

Implant-supported bridges are anchored to dental implants instead of natural teeth. This option is ideal when multiple adjacent teeth are missing or when the neighboring teeth aren't strong enough to support a traditional bridge. It also preserves healthy tooth structure since no crowns are needed on adjacent teeth.

At Smile Avenue, bridges are designed and crafted in our in-house dental lab using high-quality porcelain and zirconia. This allows us to control the color, shape, and fit with exceptional precision, and often deliver your bridge faster than offices that outsource lab work.

IS THIS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Who Needs Dental Bridges?

You may benefit from dental bridges if any of the following apply to you:

  • You're missing one to three consecutive teeth
  • You have healthy, strong teeth on both sides of the gap
  • You want a fixed (non-removable) replacement for missing teeth
  • You're not a candidate for dental implants or prefer a faster solution
  • Your bite is shifting because neighboring teeth are drifting into the gap
  • You have difficulty chewing on one side due to a missing tooth
  • You want to restore your smile without a removable partial denture

Crowns vs Veneers: What's Best for Your Smile?

WHAT TO EXPECT

The Dental Bridges Process

01

Evaluation & Planning

We examine the gap and the strength of the abutment teeth, take digital X-rays and impressions, and discuss whether a traditional or implant-supported bridge is best.

02

Abutment Preparation

The teeth on either side of the gap are gently reshaped to receive crowns. Precise digital impressions are taken, and a comfortable temporary bridge is placed.

03

Bridge Fabrication

Your custom bridge is fabricated in our in-house lab — each tooth is color-matched and shaped to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth.

04

Permanent Placement

The temporary is removed, the permanent bridge is checked for fit and bite, and then cemented securely. You leave with a complete, natural-looking smile.

Dental Bridges FAQ

A well-made bridge typically lasts 10–15 years with good oral hygiene. Some bridges last 20+ years.

For long-term health, implants are generally preferred because they preserve bone and don't require altering adjacent teeth. Bridges are a good option when implant surgery isn't possible or desired.

You'll use a floss threader or a water flosser to clean underneath the false tooth. We'll show you exactly how during your appointment. It takes just an extra minute in your routine.

The procedure is done under local anesthesia, so you won't feel pain. The abutment teeth may be slightly sensitive for a few days afterward, manageable with over-the-counter pain relief.

A properly cemented bridge is very secure. However, if the underlying abutment teeth develop decay or the cement weakens over time, a bridge may loosen. Regular checkups help catch issues early.

The infection will spread, potentially causing an abscess, bone loss, and eventually tooth loss. The pain will also worsen.
